The story takes place in an unnamed land where the Four Fiends took control of the world’s crystals, leaving the land to Chaos. Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is an action-oriented RPG that spins a new tale while featuring many of the iconic monsters and jobs from the Final Fantasy series. Ultimately it's just not much fun.Behold the beginning of a legend. I say this as someone who liked the story and characters in FF15.There were moments when I was enjoying myself with a challenging boss fight or scenario, but they were overshadowed by a whole lot of "meh." Damningly, I found myself looking for reasons not to play this game. The writing is quite poor and showcased a very generic JRPG story and walking anime tropes as characters in my estimation. I loved the challenge of the Nioh series, but it was done with moderation, and rewarded the player for playing on higher difficulties. There's also a casual difficulty setting that kind of trivializes all the content, and makes it seem pointless to do anything at higher difficulties. There's an early game boss named Tiamat which is an extreme difficulty spike from everything that comes before it. The second problem is the difficulty is all over the place. This is the opposite of how new equipment should make you feel. I experienced no joy finding treasure chests, and actually dreaded the end of a mission when I would have to sort through tons of loot and sell everything. First of all is the Monty Haul loot system where they dump an incredible amount of equipment onto you. It's like the B-team took the concepts of Nioh, and superficially overlaid them onto Final Fantasy while stripping out what made them great. As a big fan of the Nioh series, this was disappointing.
